The context
What Lagos sounded like in 2010
Nigerian pop in 2010 ran on English hooks and Afrobeats polish. Bariga, on the mainland, ran on something rawer — hustle, hard consonants, and a language the industry treated as a limitation. Olamidé Gbenga Adedeji, a Tai Solarin University dropout from Bariga, didn't see it that way.
He signed to producer ID Cabasa's Coded Tunes, the label already known for pushing indigenous sounds, and released his debut single "Eni Duro" in 2010. It was a hit large enough to land him a performance slot at that year's Hip Hop World Awards — the ceremony that would later become The Headies.
The gamble underneath it all: rap entirely in Yoruba, in an industry still convinced only English travelled. Bariga didn't just produce an artist — it produced an argument, and the argument won.
